What is spear-phishing? According to the FBI’s one post from 2009, “Instead of casting out thousands of e-mails randomly hoping a few victims will bite, spear phishers target select groups of people with something in common.” (Source)
What can happen, if someone knows your email addresses? Especially for a specific group of people’s email address list can be useful for attackers. That is named as Whaling or Whale Phishing Attack.
An email list of a public institution had a configuration issue that causes to leak all of the addresses. That article was written and sent to the accounts on that list, to prevent potential incidents as a proactive defense measurement. In this post, one incident of an e-mail list was assessed in terms of spear-phishing cases in social engineering related to the potential risks of users.
